To the North East of Orlando (25 miles/35 mins) sits one of the largest of Central Florida’s lakes that connects to St John’s river, called Lake Jessup. It was named after General Thomas Jessup who was an American Military Officer who fought in the Second Seminole War against the Seminole Indians.
Now in Florida it should be expected that you might find an alligator in any body of water, but that is a certainty on Lake Jessup as this is where all the unwanted gators are brought to from neighboring areas and so is home to the largest population in the State.
On the south side of the lake is what used to be a fish camp where people used to fish and cook their catch. It is now known as Black Hammock Adventures and has a restaurant and bar with outside seating (bug repellent is a MUST in the summer at least), as well as a few alligators on display & offering air boat rides. The air boats are US Coast Guard approved and driven by Licensed Master Captains. You will be given a pair of adjustable ear protectors to wear as it is very loud!
If you choose to go on the air boat ride you will be given a discount to eat at the restaurant, and yes, gator is on the menu! You will also get the opportunity to hold one of the baby gators (if you dare…)
Sunsets can be beautiful here and there is a large amount of bird life to be seen too.
It isn’t far from here to Sanford International Airport and so this could be a last trip adventure before leaving your vacation.
Black Hammock can be found at 2316 Black Hammock Fish Camp Rd, Oviedo FL
